One of Morro Data's methods for handling file conflicts is supported with application level file locking. Applications will set a flag in the file's metadata indicating that the file is opened by the application. The Global File System will synchronize the flag to all CacheDrives including the team portal to indicate that the file is opened by an application.

For example, if a user opens a marketing document in Microsoft Word the San Francisco office, the Global File System will propagate that information to the CacheDrives in the other offices so that if the user in Portland attempts to open the same file, the application will display a message indicating the file is locked and can only be accessed in read-only mode.

Applications that lock files:

  • Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.)
  • Adobe Create Suite programs
  • Autodesk AutoCAD
  • Autodesk Revit
  • Bluebeam Revu

Some recent MacOS versions aggressively cache file lock status. It may be necessary to eject the network share to force release a file lock or Microsoft Office documents on MacOS.
